Intellectual property attorney Sam Giesting helps businesses implement strategies to protect market share for newly developed products and to mitigate patent risks associated with new product launch.

Sam assists companies in protecting their market position through the use of patent applications in the U.S. and abroad. He advises on new product patent clearance, providing opinions of counsel as needed. Sam is also engaged to consult with engineering teams during product development to help them design for patentability and for competitor patent design-around.

His work includes partnering with companies in the aerospace, automotive, and consumer goods industries. He has also supported medical device companies as well as both public and private universities.

At the onset of every matter, Sam seeks to understand the technology at hand and then apply the law in a manner that makes financial sense. Sam’s big-picture approach to patent ownership takes into consideration each client’s commercial agenda in addition to the law. He advises on individual patents, patent families and extensive patent portfolios to guide his clients away from potential problem areas before they become roadblocks to progress. With real-world experience as an engineer at Rolls-Royce Corporation, Sam brings strategic approaches to his work based on the competitive landscape and market-facing each client.

Sam is a co-inventor for a wheelchair design for which he holds a patent. He is also an active supporter of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics programs for Indiana students.
