Chris’ IP practice is primarily focused on the information and communications technology (ICT), and engineering sectors. He has experience drafting and prosecuting patents in telecommunications, medical devices, physics, engineering, data mining, AI and machine learning, and software and internet applications. Chris joined Madderns in 2006 and was appointed a Partner in 2018.

Chris enjoys working with clients to assist them in navigating the often complex and confusing world of IP protection. He has an in-depth understanding of IP system and IP laws, both in Australia and overseas, and works with clients to determine the most appropriate strategy for protecting their technology.

Chris considers his role is to become a member of his client’s team, bringing this understanding of IP laws to assist in helping each company to grow and succeed.

Chris has a diverse technological background which he draws upon to assist his clients. He has a PhD in experimental astrophysics, which he obtained working on a cosmic ray detector in the Utah desert. He has worked as a defence researcher in explosive blast effects area at DSTG (think real-life MythBusters), before changing tack to work as a bioinformatician for the WEHI, WCHRI and the University of Adelaide.

This strong technical background enables Chris to rapidly engage with new clients to understand their technical language and problems in order to assist them in protecting their innovative solutions.
