As a patent attorney, Dr. Cornelius Mertzlufft-Paufler advises on all aspects of patents and utility models including; filing strategies, identification of inventions ("patent scouting"), drafting of property-right applications, handling opposition and nullity proceedings, searches of the prior art, expert opinions in relation to infringements, searches for workaround solutions and freedom-to-operate analysis. He has successfully represented his clients in infringement proceedings alongside legal practitioners.
As a physicist, he is primarily a point of contact in patent law matters for clients from all technical fields associated with physics, in particular mechanical engineering, medical technology, measurement technology, control technology, electrical engineering, electronics and optics. He has a particular interest in the protection of software-oriented inventions.
When giving advice, Dr. Cornelius Mertzlufft-Paufler adopts a holistic approach and has extensive expertise in relation to the filing of design and trademark applications. He regularly gives talks on IP related issues. In addition, he has experience in the field of plant variety rights and is often asked to give talks on IP-related issues.
He has been a partner at Maucher Jenkins since 2014, having joined the firm in 2007. In 2011, Dr. Cornelius Mertzlufft-Paufler was admitted to practice as a German Patent Attorney and as a European Trademark and Design Attorney, having qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2009.
After studying physics in his home city of Dresden, in Sheffield and in Leipzig and obtaining a doctorate in natural science in Freiburg with a thesis in the field of Mathematical Physics, he worked for two years at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm and then at the University of California at Berkeley, before moving to the patent department of SEW Eurodrive GmbH & Co. KG.
