Daniel is an experienced UK and European patent attorney and a partner in the firm’s electronics and computing group.
Daniel drafts and prosecutes UK and European patent applications in a wide range of technologies. He also works with foreign patent attorneys to manage the international prosecution of families of patent applications on behalf of our clients. He particularly enjoys the challenges involved with prosecuting related families of patent applications to obtain comprehensive protection for his client’s inventions in view of their commercial objectives. In particular, he has extensive experience prosecuting complex patent families in the fields of fuel cell systems and navigation technology, including primary responsibility for the drafting or prosecution of several hundred patent applications.
Daniel is a patent attorney litigator with a right to conduct litigation and a right of audience in the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court (IPEC), and a right to conduct litigation in the High Court. He works closely with the firm’s litigation team to enforce his clients’ IP rights.
Daniel also prepares oppositions and third-party submissions on behalf of clients who wish to oppose the grant of a third party’s patent at the European Patent Office (EPO). Such action may clear the way for our clients to operate in a particular area, or otherwise improve their commercial position. Most of his experience in this area is in the medical technology or consumer product space.
Education/Alumni: Daniel completed a doctorate at the University of Oxford relating to the analysis of atomic-scale redistribution during the corrosion of nuclear materials. This work was supported by scholarships from a governmental research council, St Catherine's College and a consortium of industrial partners including Rolls Royce, EDF Energy, Westinghouse, Nexia Solutions and DSTL. Whilst at Oxford he presented his research at a number of international conferences and authored several journal articles. He also holds a first-class degree in physics from the University of York. During his first degree, he spent a summer placement as a software developer at Symbian Software Ltd.
